From August 3 to 8 IPT has tested his new seismic system bought from Meridata (Finland - http://www.meridata.fi/). The system acquired have basically 4 seismic sources: two chirps (2-9kHz and 10-20kHz), one boomer and one sparker. Three of them can run simultaneously which is very important in many surveys. Using chirps and boomers or sparkers simultaneously we can get resolution and penetration in the same time as we can see at the data profile above and also on http://laps.multiply.com/photos/album/168 . All the activities at USP Ubatuba Base were followed by researchers from USP (Oceanographical Institute) and from some private and governmental companies from Rio de Janeiro (Microars and INPH). Students from USP (Oceanographycal Institute and Geophysical Institute) also took part of this training activities. Two manufacturer's representatives from Finland came to Brasil to give us a general idea about the system: operation, maintenance and processing. Mr. Kim Ola and Mr. Tom Ola from Meridata kindly attended that one week seismic talks. It was a very nice experience for everybody and also a nice opportunity to discuss about shallow investigation by seismic. Some photos of the training are above and also available at http://laps.multiply.com/photos/album/167. Our training run at IO-USP base in Ubatuba, Flamengo Inlet. Despite of the comfortable and beautiful place to stay, the geology of that area is quite excellent in terms of seismic strata identification. Conspicuous features can be seen on the seismic profiles as we can see above. We also carried out a side scan sonar using a Klein 3000 and nice profiles could also be obtained. The crew was: Dr. Moyses Tessler , Dr. Luis Conti , Carlos Rogacheski and Marcelo Rodrigues from USP; Dr. Luiz A P Souza, Nabil Alamedine, Mariucha da Silva, Mauro M Ferreira and Ricardo S. Xavier from IPT and Natalia Caldas from Microars and Roberto Bianco from INPH, both from Rio de Janeiro. During the training also we were visited by Dr. Michael M Mahiques and Clodoaldo Vieira, from USP and Gerson Salviano and José Cardoso from IPT. They spent a day with us just watching a day training. The captain of ship named Veliger II, used for the survey, was Mr Sérgio and his crew: Manoel and “Oziel Junior”.
